General questions Micro-Scope on a Stick

Q. Can I use MicroScope on a Stick on an external USB hub or do I need to plug it into the machine directly?

A. Plug MicroScope on a Stick onto a USB that is directly on the machine. MicroScope on a Stick will not work on the external USB hub because the external hub is not recognized by the BIOS.

Q. Windows 98 systems don’t have drivers for flash drives, how can I get MicroScope on a Stick to work with these systems?

A. You can download the drivers for Win 98 at
http://www.adata.com.tw/adata_en/support.php.

Q. I know that MicroScope on a Stick will boot up a machine that recognizes the USB drive as a bootable device. What options does the technician have if the machine does not recognize the USB drive as a bootable device?

A. In order to use MicroScope on a Stick, the computer must have a USB 2.0 port and the BIOS must recognize the USB drive as a hard drive; most newer machines meet these requirements.

If the computer does not meet these specifications, then you will need MicroScope on a CD or floppy to diagnose the computer. The MicroScope on a Stick main boot menu gives you the option to create a bootable floppy. It is a good idea to create a bootable floppy to have on hand for diagnosing older computers. If you would prefer a CD then please contact your sales representative or visit our online store.

Q. Can I make a bootable floppy disk or CD from MicroScope on a Stick?

A.  Yes, you can make a bootable floppy but not a CD. From the MicroScope main boot menu follow the instructions under the Utilities section to make a bootable floppy.

The instructions for using the floppy are the same as if booting from the MicroScope USB drive or the MicroScope CD.

Q. How can you tell if the computer has USB 2.0 ports?

A. USB 2.0 ports are standard on new PC’s. Some connectors have the 2.0 USB logo label on the outside of the computer. If the system is running Windows, check the hardware information to see if USB 2.0 is detected. Additionally, some BIOS’s will have USB 2.0 settings of some kind indicating it will be able to recognize the USB drive as a Hard Drive upon boot.

Q. How can you tell if the system’s BIOS will recognize a USB as a hard drive?

A. Most PCs will recognize USB as hard drive upon boot up. Some PCs will display the boot options when you go to the boot menu (on Dell systems and other computers the boot menu can be accessed by pressing F12, for Compaq systems press ESC.)

Q. Can you guarantee that the BIOS will recognize the USB drive as a hard drive if the computer has USB 2.0 ports?

A. No, on some systems the USB drive will actually be recognized as a floppy - we can’t guarantee what the BIOS will and won't do. However, everything will work the same in either circumstance (if the BIOS sees the MS Stick USB device as a floppy or a hard drive.)

Q. For systems that don’t have USB 2.0, can I boot the system under Windows or DOS and then run MS.exe as an executable file?

A. You can boot to Windows or DOS and run MS.exe but the results may not be accurate. For instance, if a memory manager is loaded you will not have access to the extended memory. If you try to run MicroScope from Windows you will not have direct access to IDE devices. So the ideal way to run MicroScope is from the operating system that is supplied on the CD or USB drive from Micro2000. (Making a bootable floppy from the MStick is available from the Main Boot Menu.)

Q. Can MicroScope on a Stick also be used to save report files? If so, what size?

A. Yes, the MicroScope, USB Scope software, and documentation use about 85 MB of drive space, leaving 39 MB for file storage.

Depending on the BIOS, the USB drive will be recognized as either the A: drive or the C: drive so the full filename and extension would be a:\report.txt or c:\report.txt depending on how the BIOS detects the USB device. Or you can simply type report.txt and the file will be saved to the default drive.

Q. How much will the upgrade to the next version of MicroScope on a Stick cost?

A. The upgrade from MicroScope on a Stick 2005 to MicroScope on a Stick 2006 will be $99.

Q. What if you don't get a picture on the screen, can you still use MicroScope on a Stick?

A. If you don’t get a picture on the screen then you should use a PostProbe PCI Card to find out whether or not the PC passes POST – the POST code error will identify the trouble area.

 Q. How much is a replacement USB drive if you accidentally destroy the Data on the Flash Drive?

A. Micro 2000 will replace the USB drive for $49.00.

Q.  How will updates for MicroScope on a stick be provided?

A. If there are updates to the program, we will use a downloadable patch to update the files on the USB Stick.
